"Cruisin the Creek" Gary Sredzienski and the Serfs (Bellows Music - BP70144) |
Heres
what TLM reviewer Beverly Paterson Says:
Ok, so you've probably already guessed that Gary Sredzienski and The Serfs is a surf band (at least with this project). But they're not your ordinary surf band. To begin with, an accordion instead of guitars dominates their instrumentals. Banjos, mandolins, and violins also dress up their material, making for a very eclectic musical complexion.
Although each instrument on "Cruisin the Creek" obviously projects an entirely different sonic seasoning, the sound is coherent and everything corresponds nicely. Galloping polka beats rub shoulders with twangy guitars, while mounds of airtight melodies melt right into your ears. Spicks and specks of Middle Eastern rhythms further arrive on "Cruisin the Creek," giving the record a neo-psychedelic film at times.
Good for Gary Sredzienski and The Serfs for having the nerve to poke their fingers into styles not normally reserved for surf bands. They've really achieved quite a feat here on this album, which, in spite of its curious stance, should have no problem satisfying even the most conservative aficionado of the genre. "Cruisin the Creek" may be far out, but it's still accessible.
